A Writers Odyssey 2021 Review
A Writer’s Odyssey is a captivating blend of various film genres. While it primarily serves as an effective nod to Peter Jackson’s epic The Lord of the Rings, it also incorporates elements from other notable films such as Marc Forster’s existential dramedy Stranger Than Fiction and Guillermo del Toro’s dark fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth, albeit to a lesser degree.
This ambitious, VFX-laden action-adventure follows Lu Kongwen (Dong Zijian), a timid author of a fantasy novel series about a brave teenager on a quest to overthrow the demonic Lord Redmayne. Kongwen is guided by a sentient, cynically humorous Black Armor (Guo Jingfei), reminiscent of Vampire Hunter D’s wisecracking symbiote Left Hand. The Black Armor blurs the line between creepy and endearing, adding a unique element to the story. However, despite the impressive CGI and imaginative world-building, the human element is crucial, highlighted by Lei Jiaying’s performance.
Lei Jiaying plays Guan Ning, a desperate father searching for his long-lost daughter. His heartfelt performance adds a necessary layer of realism that balances the film’s stylized fantasy aspects. Guan Ning is undoubtedly the emotional core of the film. Dong Zijian portrays Kongwen as an awkward millennial who uses blogging as a coping mechanism for past trauma. His character is infused with humor, silliness, and heart, making him relatable and endearing as he navigates the chaos with Guan Ning, who becomes a surrogate father figure.
The supporting cast, however, isn’t as memorable, as their roles are not fully fleshed out and serve primarily to advance the plot. The main antagonist, resembling a twisted version of Alibaba’s CEO Jack Ma, is particularly forgettable, lacking strong motives and grandiose plans for world domination.
The most significant weakness of A Writer’s Odyssey is its convoluted plot, which fails to tie up various subplots neatly. Questions about characters’ superpowers and their relevance to the story remain unanswered, although these elements allow director Lu Yang (of Brotherhood of Blades fame) to get creative with real-world fight sequences.
The film truly excels in its stunning martial-arts action set pieces in the fantasy realm. Lu Yang demonstrates a talent for combining stylized visuals and impressive CGI, creating a sense of scale and scope reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings. The director of photography, Qiming Han, deserves praise for his outstanding contribution to the film’s exquisite visuals.
China has shown its capability in producing Hollywood-esque VFX-driven extravaganzas, as evidenced by the 2019 sci-fi epic The Wandering Earth. A Writer’s Odyssey continues this trend, with production values, world-building, and CGI on par with some of the best Hollywood offerings.
Despite its flaws, A Writer’s Odyssey is an emotionally engaging, visually ambitious epic. It’s a wild ride that offers a unique cinematic experience unlike anything you’ve seen before.
